Lab Created Diamonds

Lab created diamonds, also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds, are grown in highly controlled laboratory environments using advanced technological processes that duplicate the conditions under which diamonds naturally develop when they form in the mantle, beneath the Earth’s crust. These diamonds are pure carbon atoms arranged in the characteristic diamond crystal structure. Since they are made of the same material as natural diamonds, they exhibit the same optical and chemical properties.

Lab Grown vs. Mined

Our lab created diamonds display the same physical, chemical, and optical characteristics as natural diamonds, and exhibit the same fire, scintillation, and sparkle. Using a jewelry loupe, man-made diamonds are nearly impossible to differentiate from natural diamonds. Lab diamonds can be distinguished from natural diamonds only with tests using specialized equipment. Lab created diamonds available for purchase should always come with a gem certification identifying them as laboratory-grown.

In The Press

Lab created diamonds are going mainstream. Don't just take our word for it, read what the world's largest publications are saying.

Lab-grown diamonds are eco-friendly, conflict-free and significantly lower in price than naturally mined diamonds.

They're bona fide diamonds—chemically identical to their earthen counterparts, so declared by the FTC this summer, except they cost about 30% less than mined diamonds.

Cultured diamonds are regarded as a much better socially and environmentally conscious alternative to mined stones, as they are ethically grown with minimal environmental impact.

Got questions? We’ve got answers. If you have some other questions, feel free to send us an email to hello@greatheights.com

Is this the same as a cubic zirconia?

No. Diamonds are made entirely from carbon, whereas cubic zirconia contains zero carbon! CZs are much weaker than diamonds and have different light performance and patterning. Any jeweler can easily tell the difference between a diamond and an inferior diamond simulant such as CZ or moissanite.

Is a synthetic diamond the same thing as a lab grown diamond?

Yes. Laboratory grown diamonds can be referred to as lab created diamonds, grown diamonds, synthetic diamonds, man-made diamonds, cultivated diamonds, or cultured diamonds. That being said, Ada Diamonds believes that synthetic is a scientifically inaccurate term for laboratory grown diamonds.

Can a jeweler tell that a diamond is lab grown?

No. Lab diamonds and natural diamonds of the same quality look identical, even to a trained eye. Traditional jewelers' tools such as microscopes or loupes cannot detect the difference between a laboratory grown diamond and a natural, mined diamond. The low-cost diamond testing tools used by many jewelers are designed to test between fake diamonds (CZ, moissanite) and diamonds. These cheap tools are rudimentary and are not able to accurately differentiate between mined and grown diamonds.

How do you grow a lab diamond?

By recreating the conditions underneath the Earth that result in diamond growth: pressure, heat, & carbon. Today, there are two methods of growing diamond gemstones: High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) & Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Each process is best suited for certain sizes & colors of diamonds. How Diamonds Grow

We hear this questions a lot; "How long does it take to grow a diamond?" The answer: about six weeks. Here's what has to happen.

Start
Step One

The Diamond Seed

A plate containing 20 to 30 diamond seeds (small pieces of natural diamonds) is laid in the diamond growing chamber.

Step Two

The Plasma Gas

A ball of super-heated plasma gas is pushed into the chamber.

Step Three

Turn Up The Heat

Heat inside the chamber is increased to over 1000 degrees Celsius.

Step Four

Growing The Stone

Methane and hydrogen gases are introduced to the chamber. The atoms begin stacking on the seed for a period of three or four weeks.

Step Five

Peak Quality

Technicians carefully time the removal of the diamonds once they have exemplify they most sought after qualities of size and clarity.

Step Six

Cut and Polish

The rough diamonds are removed from the chamber and go on to be cut and polished. This process is identical to that of mined diamonds.
